The Netherlands has been flexible in its form of labor since the 1982 Vasenar Convention, making it very free to choose to work four days a week in many occupations. Discrimination according to the type of working hours in a company was banned in 1996, and equal treatment is legally guaranteed, whether working 40 hours a week or 20 hours a week. It is common to adjust salaries and vacation days based on 38 hours a week depending on the type of work. Usually, negotiations with employers include choosing to work 8 hours/week 5 days or 9 hours/week 4 days (36 hours) if you do not have children, and 8 hours/week 4 days (32 hours a week) a day or as little as 8 hours/week 3 days (24 hours a week) if you need to raise children or want to enjoy your hobbies.

However, four-day work per week is a form of universal choice according to individual preferences regardless of the presence or absence of children, but three-day work per week is often a form of replacing long-term parental leave to raise children for elderly workers who are about to retire or have health problems requiring long-term treatment. Unlike Western European countries, there are constant calls to reduce the standard working hours because salary cuts are made according to working hours.
